Move your data to another computer

In this article, we’ll explain the steps for moving your My Checkbook data from one computer to another. To complete these steps, you’re going to need to know which version of My Checkbook you’re coming from and which version you’re moving to. You can find which version you’re using by going to the About My Checkbook menu item.

The version of My Checkbook is going to determine where the data files are stored. We’ll use this information to locate the data files you want to move from your old computer and where we need to move the files to your new computer, if you’re using the same version of the software on both computers.

The following table shows what action needs to happen if you’re coming from the version on the left column and going to the version on the top row. You will either move the data, or import the data depending on the versions. Notice that whenever the version is the same that you’re coming from and going to, you will just be moving your data. If the data is from an earlier version, you’ll be importing the data.

  • Same Version – Move Data
  • Earlier Version – Import Data

Also notice that you can’t use newer data on older versions.

Locate the data files

The first step is to locate your old data files. Here are the locations where you can find the data depending on the version.

  • 2.x — “My Checkbook Accounts” folder in the documents folder
  • 3.0 – 3.3 — My Checkbook Accounts.mcbd file in the documents folder
  • 3.5 – 4.x — Use the “Show data folder” item from the Help menu in My Checkbook to reveal the data folder location.

Move the data files

If you need to move the data files according to the table above, you’ll follow the same steps on your new computer to locate the data file/folder location. Then you’ll move the data file to that same location, making sure to only move and/or copy data files when the My Checkbook program is no longer running.

When you launch My Checkbook on a new computer where no data files are found, the program will automatically create a new blank set of files. If you have launched My Checkbook on your new computer to simply reveal the location of the data files, then you may need to move or delete the newly created files out of the way so you can replace them with the old data files from your old computers.

Import the data

If you’re importing the data files from an older version of My Checkbook into a newer version of My Checkbook, choose the Import feature from the File menu. Follow the steps to import the .mcb or .mcbd file accordingly.

Confirm your new data!

Before you delete your old data files, confirm that you have successfully moved or imported your data into the My Checkbook on your new computer.
